Fire Safety Tips for Those Going to University

Check there are working smoke alarms on every level and test them regularly 

Know where fire alarms, escape routes, fire equipment and keys are located 

Keep fire doors closed and never wedge them open 

Plan and practise an escape route with your housemates, with a back-up option 

Switch off chargers, hair straighteners and other appliances when not in use - unless it's the fridge freezer. 

Only charge devices when you are awake, in the property and avoid charging near exits 

Avoid overloading sockets or extension leads 

After cooking, check the oven, airfryer and hob are switched off 

Do not cook if you are tired or under the influence of alcohol 

Keep the kitchen clean to prevent grease build-up as this can easily catch fire

Smoke alarms must never be covered or tampered with. This is dangerous and could lead to disciplinary or legal action. 

Smoking/vaping indoors is not allowed in most student accommodation. Use designated areas and dispose of cigarettes safely. 

Report any fire safety concerns straight away 

Let staff know if you need a personal evacuation plan 

Follow all safety rules and take fire drills seriously 

Make sure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are installed and working 

Keep escape routes clear 

Be aware of locked exits or barred windows and plan how to get out
